Cambridgeshire's own version of Central Park

Our Talbot Sports Turf division was engaged to construct new natural turf sports facilities as part of a “Central Park” concept at Darwin Green, Cambridgeshire.

The sportsfields which formed part of a residential development included:

• 2 X 100 x 60m football pitches (+ run-offs)
• 1 X cricket square (5-Pitch)

The works included site clearance to remove existing surface vegetation and crop residue, topsoil strip and removal to temporary stockpile, cut and fill earthworks, topsoil screening, topsoil replacement, the installation of a sportsfield drainage scheme, cricket square construction, reinstatement and 12-months agronomic maintenance post construction to establish the new pitches.

The sports pitches where commissioned to meet the basic Performance Quality Standards stipulated by Sport England.

Summary of the work undertaken

Based on the findings from the site investigation undertaken we were aware that the site had approximately a 400 mm depth of stony Sandy Clay Loam of topsoil overlying 600 mm depth of a clay dominated subsoil.

This implied suboptimal surface water drainage rates for winter sports use and a stone content hazard to site users. Overall site gradients were acceptable but large scale, rolling undulations at the surface would need removal. A new grass sward would need to be established.

Given this, the following approach was recommended:

  • clear the existing surface vegetation.
  • strip the topsoil to facilitate stone removal via screening and subsoil remodelling works.
  • remodel the subsoil through cut and fill earthworks to create a uniformly graded surface.
  • screen the topsoil and replace over the subsoil formation surface.
  • install a surface bypass drainage scheme (Sport England Type 4 – infiltration 5 mm h-1).
  • ameliorate the topsoil by the incorporation of sand into the upper profile, enabling a less cohesive playing surface, adding integrity to the new drainage scheme.
  • re-establish (cultivations, fertilisation and seeding) the site following the works.
  • undertake 12-months agronomic maintenance to grow-in the pitches post construction.
